Wayne Johnson was a student at Michael Byrne's previous school who stabbed him whilst Michael tried to break up a fight. We first see Wayne in a nightmare of Michael's, where he had a flashback of the stabbing incident.

In Michael's first episode, Wayne was found not guilty of the stabbing at court. At the end of the episode, Michael paid a visit to Wayne's house, where he held Wayne against a wall and demanded he told the truth.

In Episode 15, Wayne made a surprise visit to the school, causing Michael to chase him off the premises. Wayne threatened Michael with a pipe, which Michael managed to grab. Threatening Wayne with the pipe, Michael forces Wayne into the road, where he is unexpectedly hit by a van being driven by a drunk driver. Michael was unaware that the entire incident had been recorded by Phoenix Taylor, and in Episode 18 Michael discovers that Phoenix had recorded the whole thing and begged him to give him the video file. Phoenix later gives Michael the video.

Wayne's last appearance was in Episode 20 of Series 7, where he was seen leaving hospital before entering the school to confront Michael, after he lost everything after being kicked out of his house by his girlfriend, meaning he could no longer see his daughter. Eventually, Wayne broke down and finally confessed that he stabbed Michael because he believed that he had 'given up on him'. Michael then comforted Wayne as he cried holding a photo of his newborn daughter. Linda called Wayne an ambulance as Michael left the room. It is unknown what became of Wayne after as he wasn't seen or heard from again.
