Series 16 was commissioned in 2024, alongside Series 17, with the castings of the series being confirmed in June 2024.
This was the first series for which BBC One aired two episodes a week instead of one, broadcasting at 9pm and 10:40pm on Tuesdays.

On 1 April 2025 the BBC Press Office confirmed the return of Lindsey Coulson as Stella Drake and the re-addition of Jason Merrells as Jack Rimmer to the main cast, having made recurring appearances in Series 15, alongside the addition of Jon Richardson to the cast. The series was also confirmed to air later in 2025.[1]
