Mike Rutherford is a local police sergeant and the husband of deputy head Joe Casey. They have two foster children together, Dwayne and Zayne Jackson.

Series 11[]

In Series 11, Mike apprehends Danny Lewis as he attempts to escape school grounds on the first day of term. After realising he is a former pupil of Waterloo Road he regrets using force on him, but is reassured by Joe.

After Danny is arrested for stabbing Vinny McCullen at the end of Series 11.

Series 12[]

Mike becomes a security officer at the school in Series 12, which causes a rift between him and Dwayne. After Dwayne accidentally breaks Myles Massey's leg and punches another police officer during a football match, Dwayne runs away, and Mike and his colleagues track him down and find him in the luggage compartment of a bus, passed out from dehydration.

Series 13[]

In Series 13, Mike begins taking self-defence classes at the school, including kickboxing lessons. Shola Aku takes the classes and ends up developing a crush on him. After the contents of her diary, in which she fantasises about him, are exposed to the school, she runs off upset and Mike goes after her, finding her in an empty classroom, where she ends up suddenly hugging Mike right as Schuey Weever walks past. Schuey tells the other deputy head, Lindon King, that he saw Mike hugging Shola, and Mike is suspended from his police duties and not allowed on school premises. He is exonerated after it is confirmed that everything in Shola's diary was made up.

At the end of Series 13, Mike tackles Pete Weever and arrests him on suspicion of attempted murder after Pete hits Nicky Walters with his car while trying to run over Donte Charles.

Series 14[]

In Series 14 Mike returns to regular police duty and leads the investigation into the death of Waterloo Road student Brian Osbourne.

Mike's actor, Ryan Clayton, is best known for his role as Josh Tucker in Coronation Street from 2018 to 2020.
