Outwardly, Carol Barry is a glam single mother struggling to raise her three unruly kids, but is in fact the iron-fisted matriarch of the Barry family's criminal empire. While often tough on her two daughters, eldest son and apple of her eye Barry can do no wrong. Fiercely loyal and protective of all her kids, woe betide anyone who angers this lioness.

In Series 8, when Kacey reveals her gender identity issues, and that she thinks she is actually a boy, Carol reacts badly and forces Kacey to come into school wearing a skirt.

Later in the series, Carol decides to air the family's problems on the Jeremy Kyle-like TV show Noble Thoughts. Carol wants to get rid of Kevin out of Dynasty's love life until it is learned that his mother Daisy had kicked Kevin out when he was just 10 years old. Horrified by this revelation, Carol defends Kevin and slaps Daisy in the face, saying she doesn't deserve kids. She then finally accepts Kevin as part of her daughter's life.

In Series 9, Carol needed money for her family and so she became a barmaid at the local pub, but is forced to leave after George Windsor punches the sleazebag of a landlord in the face. Carol then becomes a dinner lady at Waterloo Road School, and embarks on a rocky relationship with George. George's mother took an immediate distaste to Carol when they first met. Between Series 9 and Series 10, Carol and George go on a cruise ship holiday together, which goes absolutely disastrously, and when they return in Series 10, George dumps her. George then receives a compensation payout of £15,506 for the cruise fiasco, but lies to Carol that it was only £2,000, giving her £1,000.

In Series 10 Episode 3, Carol pretends to slip and break her ankle in Maggie's classroom in an attempt to get a compensation claim against the school. When Vaughan catches her out on her lie, he fires her, and she is not seen again.
