Dr Alex Stoneham was a doctor who cared for Matt Wilding and Rosie Matthews's daughter Martha when she was born premature.

In Series 7 Episode 22, Rosie unexpectedly goes into labour and Martha is born premature. At this point the doctors are unsure whether she will survive. In Series 7 Episode 23, Alex explains to a relieved Matt and Rosie that the antibiotics are working and that Martha will pull through. Rosie and Alex are shown holding hands, unbeknownst to Matt.

In Series 7 Episode 24, Matt is able to hold Martha for the first time. He thanks Alex for everything he has done for her. Rosie later reveals to Matt that another doctor will be taking care of Martha as her and Alex are in a relationship. Rosie tells Matt that Alex has been offered a consultancy post in Bristol which would mean they would have to move away. A furious Matt accuses Alex of taking advantage of Rosie and says he will report him and get him struck off.

Rosie later visits Matt and explains that Alex will do his best to find a job locally, but if not she would end the relationship as she made a promise to Matt first. Matt tells Rosie that he doesn't want to ruin her chances of happiness. Neither Alex nor Rosie are seen again.

It is assumed that Alex got a job locally as Matt chooses to stay in Rochdale when the school relocates to Scotland in order to be close to Martha.
